As discussed in my last post, if you are a woman and your waist size is 35 inches or greater, you are at a  high risk for developing heart disease, cancer, dementia, and a wide range of other diseases.  A 35 inch waist (40 inches for men) means you have accumulated visceral, or deep, fat around your abdominal organs.  And that fat has been linked to deadly diseases.

How do you shred deep fat, or prevent it in the first place?  Experts point to three key areas.

First, diet.  The main culprit is sugar.  Stop, or at least drastically reduce, drinking sweet drinks and eating refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, white bread, white rice, pastries, snacks, pasta, sweets, and  processed foods.  Instead, pack your meals with protein and dietary fiber.  Eat your veggies, along with whole grains, beans, peas and fruit.

Second, sleep.  Get at least 7 hours a night.  One study, cited by New York Times health write Jane Brody in her June 12, 2018 column, found that “those who slept five hours or less were a third more likely to gain 32 pounds” over a 16 year period.

Third, inactivity.  A recent national study found that weight gain and deep fat stomach size is more closely linked to inactivity than calorie intake.
